Major Spencer
Most people with diverticulosis do not have symptoms unless their condition develops into diverticular disease. Dr. Patel, can you tell us about symptoms of diverticular disease?

Dr. Patel
I sure can, Major Spencer. If diverticulosis does cause symptoms, they may include:

  • Bloating
  • Constipation or diarrhea, and
  • Cramping or pain in the lower abdomen

In cases where diverticulosis causes diverticular bleeding, symptoms may include:

  • Large amount of red or maroon-colored blood in the stool that is painless, and
  • Dizziness, light-headedness, or weakness

When diverticulosis leads to diverticulitis, symptoms can include:

  • Severe pain in the lower left side of the abdomen
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Fevers and chills, and
  • Nausea or vomiting
