Several conditions that involve the digestive system also affect other organ systems in the body. For example, obesity is a condition in which a person has too much body fat. In addition to having a significant negative impact on the liver, obesity can affect the cardiovascular, endocrine, and musculoskeletal systems.

Another example is anemia. Anemia is a condition in which a person has a low red blood cell count, which are the cells that carry oxygen to tissues in the body. Anemia can be a complication or symptom of a number of digestive diseases. One type of anemia, called vitamin B12 deficiency anemia, can also affect the nervous system.

Unexplained weight loss is another digestive condition that can be a symptom of many different diseases, including mental health disorders, chronic infections, or an overactive thyroid gland. It can also be due to a disease specifically involving the digestive tract.

As most people have experienced, gastrointestinal, or GI, infections affect the digestive tract, causing anything from mild nausea to significant vomiting or diarrhea. Some of these infections can also cause long-term symptoms involving the skin, nerves, muscles, heart, or joints.
