Liver Cancer

Dr. Mansfield
Liver cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the liver. Dr. Patel, can you tell us about liver cancer?

Dr. Patel
Definitely, Dr. Mansfield. The most common type of liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma, which forms in the tissue of the liver. Although it is rare, another type of liver cancer that occurs in young children is called hepatoblastoma.

Cancer can also begin in the bile ducts inside the liver. This is called intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

Many cancers found in the liver do not begin in the liver, but spread, or metastasize, from other organs. Cancers that commonly metastasize to the liver include colon, pancreatic, lung, and breast cancers.

Although it has improved in recent decades, the survival rate for hepatocellular carcinoma is still quite low. Early detection and treatment significantly increase the likelihood of survival.
