Stomach Cancer

Dr. Mansfield
Stomach cancer, also called gastric cancer, is a disease in which malignant cells form in the mucosa, or lining, of the stomach. Dr. Patel, can you tell us more about stomach cancer?

Dr. Patel
Definitely, Dr. Mansfield. A vast majority of stomach cancers are adenocarcinomas, meaning they begin in the cells that make and release mucus and other fluids. Other, more rare types of stomach cancer include:

  • Gastrointestinal carcinoid tumors
  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumors, and
  • Lymphomas

Unfortunately, stomach cancer often has no early signs or symptoms, so most stomach cancers are diagnosed at an advanced stage, when the survival rate is significantly lower.
